Live Green, generate your own energy
by Chief Alchemist a.k.a Wiley Chin - July 10, 2008 Posted: 2:45:48 PM EDT
I've always been very interested in the Solar-powered homes. For one, it holds the promise of cheap, renewable energy. Secondly, it is less polluting.
I visited the much talked about Setia Ecopark last weekend and was told of this thing called the 'BIPV system' that will be integrated into the homes built by them. BIPV, what's that?
I googled it and here's what it is.
BIPV stands for 'Building Integrated Photovoltaics'.
'One of the most promising renewable energy technologies is photovoltaics. Photovoltaics (PV) is a truly elegant means of producing electricity on site, directly from the sun, without concern for energy supply or environmental harm. These solid-state devices simply make electricity out of sunlight, silently with no maintenance, no pollution, and no depletion of materials.'
You can read more about BIPV system here : http://www.wbdg.org/resources/bipv.php
Did you know that the Malaysian government is encouraging the adoption of BIPV system in your house and your office? No? There's a programme called SURIA 1000. You can read more about Suria 1000 here. http://www.mbipv.net.my/suria.htm
Here's an NST article about Suria and their BIPV project: http://www.redorbit.com/news/business/1001096/free_power_for_all/index.html
BIPV system is expensive to install for now. From what I've heard, a typical unit will cost around RM200,000 minus the installation charge. But with the rising energy cost and the projected increase in the adoption of BIPV for homes and offices in Malaysia and across the world, the viability of switching to solar energy might come sooner than you will expect.
In Europe, especially across Germany, the adoption of zero-carbon emission homes have encouraged the mass adoption of BIPV systems. You can see solar panels everywhere across the towns of the country.
I've seen some zero carbon home models in Self-Build Homes magazines and it is my dream to build one in Malaysia one day.
Now the challenge is to build one that is adaptive to the tropical Malaysian climate.
Wish me luck!

Who's That Girl?
by Chief Alchemist a.k.a Wiley Chin - July 8, 2008 Posted: 2:35:24 PM EDT
I was going through my phone's photo album and was deleting the unwanted shots when I stumbled onto this photo.
I didn't take this photo.
And I am not sure I can recognise the girl in the photo... but...

It's time to ask the little girl (who is only pre-teens btw) at home about her photo posing habits. I was very sure the scourge of such silly and slightly inappropriate poses won't make it to my home but I guess the peer-pressure to conform and belong is as strong as ever...
And the glory and power of pop culture.
Looks like the turbulent years are about to begin.

Bird Watching
by Chief Alchemist a.k.a Wiley Chin - July 1, 2008 Posted: 2:02:47 PM EDT
We humans assume we are more sophisticated than animals. Well, there isn't that much of a difference, actually.
For instance, how can you tell a male bird from a female bird?
Too difficult, yes?
Not an Ornithologist, right?
Not an expert in birds, hrm...?
It is very simple, actually.
Let's try this.
Which one is the female gull?

See.
You don't have to be a genius, yes?

XiMnet got Mootooled!
by Chief Alchemist a.k.a Wiley Chin - June 19, 2008 Posted: 11:45:13 PM EDT
After working on this forever, we have finally Mootool-ed this new site together. I would still call it a Beta site, irregardless we've decided to pull the cover off this project. There are a couple of challenges putting this thing together, chief of all is our great reluctance to make our users wait.
We have to settle for a trade-off, a decent wait time, some nifty navigation effects (still need refinement) and beautifully shot images included the pressure to over-optimise and therby killing the quality.

And as usual, browser compatability is an issue. Somethings we attempted only worked in IE and some worked only for Firefox. Also screen-sizes screw up some of our alignments. This might not happen in Flash or Silvierlight but hey, we want to run on a clean, green engine for now. No lead, no unneccesary wastage.
Well, we are serving it up before the pot roast with the soup.
Andrew, Lydia and Sheng, great job!
